a little more about Cork

Cork cityCork city dates from the early 7th century, when it is popularly assumed that a monastery was inaugurated by St Finbarr, "Fin Barra" is known as the patron saint of Cork. But it was the area of South Main Street around the tenth century that life really started with the Scandinavian development of Corcach Mór na Mumhan, 'the great marsh of Munster'. The twelfth century brought the arrival of the Anglo-Normans, who established the primary city topography. With slick trading and commercial application the strategic importance of Cork greatly increased. In the late fourteenth century Cork was a key player in defending the English colony. Cork enjoyed its golden age in the eighteenth century, particularly its second half, when it became firmly established as Ireland's second city. During that period Cork became the most important centre for butter production in the Atlantic world. Cork's dominance as a trading and export centre was due in no small part to its strategically situated harbour. The motto on this Irish city's proud crest is 'statio bene fida carinis' - 'a trustworthy anchorage for ships'. The harbour was of vital importance for British naval supremacy. Even more important was its commercial function. Cork remained Ireland's second city until 1841; when industrial Belfast pulled ahead.
