a little more about Ljubljana

The city is a little gem of a central European destination, beautifully appointed it’s a city where central and western Europe blend into a cosy (population is only 275,000) canal straddled, picture postcard capital. Legend even suggests that Ljubljana was founded by Jason and the Argonauts fleeing King Aetes with the “golden fleece”. The country of Slovenia is found just to the right of neighbouring Italy, with whom it shares a coastline (Trieste is 110 kms), bordering Austria to the north, Hungary to the east and Croatia to the south.
There’s evidence of a much longer existence but Ljubljana’s history is recorded in more detail from its Roman origins, between the first and sixth centuries when it was known as “Emona”.
Unfortunately the great city was destroyed at the end of the 6 th century and kept a pretty low profile until 1335 when those Europe conquering Hapsburgs (Austrian Empire) took over, Ljubljana remained under Austrian influence until the first world war, whereafter Slovenia became one part of the six republics of Yugoslavia. With the last millennium’s eventual disintegration of the USSR’s centrally governed communism (leading to the dissolution and regional correction of old Yugoslavia), Slovenia gained its cherished independence in 1991, with Ljubljana recognised as its vibrant and engaging capital, eventually joining the EU in 2005.
Suffice to say you’d be hard pushed to find a nicer place for a European city break and upmarket stag weekend.
