a little more about Torquay

Torquay stag weekend informationOne opinion is that the birth of the resort of Torquay could be attributed to our French neighbours in the late 1700s. They had military personnel stationed in Devon and found, to their surprise, the climate agreeable. The word got out and Torquay quickly became a magnet for 18th century holidaymakers preferring the southerly journey to international travel.

Those stiff dictators of fashion, form and protocol the Victorians recognised this south coast town as a pleasant spot to enjoy a sun soaked sojourn. The draw of visitors made Torquay a wealthy place indeed which is reflected in a very attractive town. The aristocracy visited with enthusiasm putting a thriving Torquay on the map and a must for a summer social - however mixed torquaying was not allowed until 1899.
