The IAA appreciates the difficulties facing passengers and airlines at this time. In the interest of passenger and aircraft safety, and to avoid confusion, the IAA bases all of its decisions about airspace restrictions on data provided by the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre and Eurocontrol.
This information arrives approximately every six hours and this, in turn, dictates how often the IAA can provide the public with updates. The impact of further volcanic activity in Iceland at 16.30 yesterday, Tuesday 4th May 2010, could only be assessed late last night. Decisions are taken solely on the grounds of safety.
Airline passengers should continue to contact their airline websites to establish the up-to-date position on flight schedules.
Overflights of Irish airspace between North America and Europe will continue as normal.

Fresh ash ban strikes over west Scotland and Northern Ireland - 04/05/2010
The Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) has recently updated their website to announce that all Irish Airports will re-open for full operations from 13:00 today. The next update from the IAA is due at 20:00, Tuesday 4th May 2010. The statement from the IAA website is below. For further information please see: http://www.iaa.ie/
NATS and the CAA have also updated their websites with regards to the increased concentration of volcanic ash in and around UK airspace. NATS are still advising of a no-fly zone being in place in the West of Scotland and Northern Ireland until at least 13:00 hours today.
NATS are due to release another statement at 12:00 noon. The NATS and CAA statements are below for your information.
Statement from IAA:
IRISH AIRPORTS WILL REOPEN AT 1300 hrs
The IAA has cleared Irish Airports to open for full operations from 1300 hrs local time today Tuesday 4th May. Dublin, Shannon, Cork, Knock, Donegal, Waterford, Kerry, Galway and Sligo may resume normal operations.
Current Information from the VAAC confirms this information. We expect operations to be normal at all Irish Airports for the rest of today.
Ireland will not fall within the predicted area of ash concentrations that exceed acceptable engine manufacturer tolerance levels.
Our decision to close earlier today was based solely on the safety risks to crews and passengers as a result of the drift south of the volcanic ash cloud caused by the north easterly winds.
The situation will be reviewed as the week goes on. Winds are forecast to continue coming from a Northerly direction for the next few days and this could lead to further problems.
There will be a further update on the IAA website at 20.00hrs tonight, Tuesday 4th May, 2010.

UK airport disruption due to Volcanic ash from Iceland (UPDATE) - 20/04/2010
Since our last statement at 2100 yesterday, the volcano eruption in Iceland has strengthened and a new ash cloud is spreading south and east towards the UK. This demonstrates the dynamic and rapidly changing conditions in which we are working.
Latest information from the Met Office shows that the situation is variable. The information shows that Scottish airports should be available from 0700 and more airspace over England may become available from 1300 although not as far south as the main London airports.
We will continue to monitor Met Office information and the situation is likely to change during the course of the day. We will make a further statement at approximately 0900 (local time), today, Tuesday 20 April.
NATS is maintaining close dialogue with the Met Office and with the UK's safety regulator, the CAA, in respect of the international civil aviation policy we follow in applying restrictions to use of airspace.
We are working closely with Government, airports and airlines, and airframe and aero engine manufacturers to get a better understanding of the effects of the ash cloud and to seek solutions.
EUROCONTROL - Update on European air traffic situation
At the current time, air traffic control services are not being provided to civil aircraft in the major part of European airspace. This includes Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, northern Italy, Romania, Slovenia, Switzerland, parts of Ukraine and the UK. In some of these areas the upper airspace has been made available, depending on the observed and forecasted area of possible ash contamination. However, it is difficult to access this airspace as in most cases the surrounding area is not available for flights.
Flights are taking place in southern and central Europe, including the Czech Republic, the Balkan area, Bulgaria, Hungary, southern Italy and France, Greece, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, and Turkey, as well as parts of northern Europe (Norway and parts of Sweden).
Approximately 600 trans-Atlantic flights take place each day, 300 in each direction. Of the 300 flights that would usually arrive in Europe, 219 flights have arrived in Europe today, and 233 have left Europe.
EUROCONTROL, the air navigation service providers and the airlines are working closely together to ensure that whenever airspace becomes available, even if it is only for a short time, flights are able to take place in the most efficient and safe manner.

UK airport disruption due to Volcanic ash from Iceland - 19/04/2010
We are pleased to advise that the latest NATS statement advises that restrictions preventing flights in the UK controlled airspace will remain in place until 07.00 Tuesday 20th April. However from 0700 UK time tomorrow, they anticipate that Scottish airspace will be open, and south to a line between Teeside and Blackpool. Mainland Scottish airports will be open. Restrictions to airspace in England and Wales may be lifted, during the course of Tuesday 20th April.
The next update from NATS is expected at 21.00 Monday 19th April.
Please see the NATS statement below for further details:
Statement on Icelandic volcanic eruption: Monday April 19, 1530The volcanic eruption has reduced and the volcano is not currently emitting ash to altitudes that will affect the UK. Assuming there are no further significant ash emissions we are now looking at a continuously improving situation.
Based on the latest information from the Met Office, NATS advises that the restrictions currently in place across UK controlled airspace will remain in place until 0700 (local time) tomorrow, Tuesday.
From 0700 (local time) tomorrow, Tuesday, Scottish airspace will be open, and south to a line between Teeside and Blackpool. Mainland Scottish airports will be open.
This is a dynamic and changing situation and is therefore difficult to forecast beyond 0700 local; however, the latest Met Office advice is that the contaminated area will continue to move south with the possibility that restrictions to airspace above England and Wales, including the London area, may be lifted later tomorrow (Tuesday).
We will continue to monitor Met Office information and review our arrangements in line with that. We will advise further arrangements at approximately 2100 (local time), today.
It is now for airports and airlines to decide how best to utilise this opportunity. Passengers should contact their airlines to find out how this will affect their travel plans.

National Travel Health Network and Centre, latest update - 30/11/2009
H1N1 update - swine flu 30/11/2009
The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that as of 22 November 2009, more than 620,000 confirmed cases of pandemic influenza (H1N1/Swine Flu) have occurred, with more than 7,800 deaths from 207 countries and territories. As most countries have stopped counting individual cases, confirmed cases represent a significant underestimate of the actual number of cases.
NaTHNac advise to travellers is as follows:
- Travellers need to be aware that some countries have put into place health screening of arriving passengers.
- Travellers should check with their tour operator, and they can consult the country pages of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for specific information.
- Travellers should obtain travel insurance that covers trip cancellation and any potential disruptions to their trip, such as quarantine.
- Those who are ill with an ILI should delay their travel, and seek medical advice.
- Travellers can consult this service for guidance on managing an ILI, however, if they have serious underlying health conditions, are pregnant, or are calling about children under one year of age, they should contact their GP directly.
- Travellers who fall in the clinical risk groups for seasonal influenza and pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza should receive vaccination prior to travel.
For further information, please go to the NaTHNac website www.nathnac.org.
rabies in Italy 30/11/2009
In October 2008 rabies was reported in a fox in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of north-east Italy. Since this time a total of 43 cases of animal rabies have been reported in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia and neighbouring Veneto regions. Several animal species have been affected; the most recent case was on 16 November 2009 when a dog was found dead in Veneto. Italy has been considered rabies-free since 1997. However, prior to October 2008 rabies in foxes was detected in this region in 1995.
Local preventive policies, including compulsory vaccination of domestic animals and livestock, have been put in place in the northern districts of Italy and in response to these most recent cases, additional control measures have been implemented including restriction of the movement of dogs, enhanced surveillance of wildlife and oral vaccination of wild foxes.
NaTHNac advice to travellers is as follows:
- Travellers to the northern and eastern border regions of Italy should avoid contact with wild and domestic animals.
- Should any traveller experience an animal bite, scratch, or lick, they should seek urgent medical advice to assess the risk of rabies, either in Italy or on return to the UK, from their GP or NHS Direct.
- Following an animal bite, wounds should be thoroughly cleansed and a medical assessment sought, even if the wound appears trivial. Prompt post-exposure rabies treatment may be necessary, even if pre-exposure rabies vaccine has been received.
- Other areas of Italy are considered rabies-free. Nevertheless, travellers should seek early medical assessment in the case of bites, scratches or licks from animals.
outbreak of E.Coli in the Benidorm region of Spain. 30/11/2009
As of the 27th November there has been 14 confirmed cases with onset dates ranging from the 12 – 21 November 2009. All confirmed cases are in adults.
Health authorities in Spain have been formally notified of the situation and have commenced local investigations. A specific source has not been identified.
NaTHNac advice to travellers is as follows:
Identifying the source involved in this cluster is key to offering definitive advice to travellers. However, there are common sense measures that people visiting Benidorm can take to protect themselves and their families against this infection. E. coli is transmitted through the oral-faecal route, therefore it is important to practise food and water hygiene precautions:
- wash your hands especially before eating, after going to the toilet and after touching any animals
- ensure that food is cooked thoroughly
- avoid food outlets where uncooked meat is in contact with cooked food
- avoid raw vegetables or salads
- unpasteurised milk, cheese, ice cream and other dairy products
- drink bottled or heated beverages
- avoid swallowing water while swimming
For further information about what to do if travellers suspect they have contracted E. coli infection is available from the HPA website.
