The centre of Reading is very easy to walk around – from Reading rail station, you should be able to easily walk to most hotels, clubs, bars, and restaurants without issue. There are buses around if necessary – they don’t give change, but 2-4 of you can buy a group ticket for £8, which is great when there’s a few of you on the town. If you need to get further out to one of your activities, or somewhere not covered by a bus route, just let us know and we can arrange transfers for you.
Whatever you want, the Hexagon will probably have a performance due. Russell Brand, Jules Holland, Sarah Millican, Jason Manford, Alan Davies, and Jimmy Carr have all performed recently, and there are plenty more acts coming up, so it’s worth checking out who’s overlapping with your stay in Reading. The Hexagon also puts on a few concerts and gigs throughout the year, if you’d rather something you can awkwardly shuffle on the spot to.
Reading FC – Reading FC has seen a lot of upgrades over its 140 year history – principally, the grounds (moving from Elm Park to the £50m Madejski Stadium in 1998), and the nickname (formerly the Biscuitmen, after the booming biscuit industry in Reading, they’re now the much more impressive-sounding Royals). Unfortunately, they were relegated where it counts – from the Premier League to the Championship.
Reading is buzzing with life all year round, with numerous festivals and celebrations rocking the town. The legendary Reading Festival dominates the events scene, but there’s plenty more going on throughout the rest of the year.
May – Beer and Cider Festival. With sausages, pies, beer, ale, cider, lager and live music, it’s the most manly festival around.
July – the Real Ale and Jazz Festival continues the beery fun
June – Eat Reading Live is the food festival of choice, with street food dishes from local restaurants, and cocktail demonstrations in the evening.
October / November – Comedy Festival. It’s got everything you need for some real belly laughs, with performances from top comedians like Jason Manford and Jimmy Carr, workshops to bring out your funny side, and showings and panels of top comedy films.
