York is a really wonderful, bustling city where there’s always something going on, so if you and the boys are at a loose end over your weekend away, here’s a quick guide to everything going on. You’ll be spoilt for choice here in York!
If you fancy catching one of the latest releases whilst you’re away, the Reel cinema in the Odeon buildings on Blossom Street in York should do the trick. Housed in an unusual and historic building, it’s the perfect place to relax in front of a flick or two.
All kinds of performances show year round at this historic and attractive building in St. Leonard’s Place in the city. Watch theatre in the round in one of many seats at this large venue with a huge capacity. It used to be an old hospital, so look out for cool old artefacts – and the pantomime is legendary!
York Opera House
Not just for massive operatic performances, although those in themselves are pretty impressive, see dance, comedy theatre and music at this great venue where all the UK’s biggest touring shows proudly play.
The York Barbican
York’s venues all host massive acts and the quirky Barbican is no exception. Susan Boyle, Ross Noble, Chris Ramsay and David Gest are all on the horizon and they even hold the UK snooker championships there!
Illuminating York (Oct-Nov)
Well worth a look if you’re around in York at this time of year, see the historic buildings which the city is so famous for in an entirely new light – literally! Coloured lights make the whole place look absolutely breathtaking.
Aesthetica Short Film Festival (November)
A must for film buffs, this short film festival in York is a major player in the UK scene. See fantastic new short films made by independent and local enthusiasts and enjoy workshops in the craft headed up by industry experts.
Oxjam York (October)
Taking up the entire month, there are incredible music festivals going on all over the city and they’re well worth a look. It’s run by a dedicated group of volunteers and raises millions for Oxfam every year.
York Chocolate Festival (March/April)
York is the home of chocolate in the UK and so it’s fitting that this amazing festival dedicated to the tasty brown stuff happens every year! Enjoy chocolate dinners (yep, that’s a thing), talks and lectures and workshops – and a fair few tasters. Delicious.
CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival (September)
If you happen to be on your stag do at this time of the year in York, the beer and cider festival is an absolute no brainer. It’s all supported by the prestigious CAMRA organisation, so you can be sure that the tipples you’re supping on are the very best around! Come for the tasters, stay for the delicious craft beers on tap.
York City FC
The main football team of York isn’t really known for its incredible major league performance, but is renowned for ‘giant killing’ and even beat the mighty Man U in the 1995-1996 League Cup. Their home ground is Bootham Crescent.
The racecourse in York is one of the very best in the country which welcomes tens of thousands of people every year for 5 race meetings – they even hosted Ascot in 2005.
York has hosted the UK snooker championships on many occasions recently in the Barbican centre.
