What You’ll Be Doing

So What's the plan

  • There are three men's races and one for women 'The Master of Ceremonies' escorts an invited guest to the start line and helps him (or her) to sit on the precipitous slope, holding a 7-8lb. Double Gloucester cheese.
  • At the command (given by the M.C.) of....
  • 'ONE to be ready!'
  • 'TWO to be steady!'
  • 'THREE to prepare!'......
  • It's then downhill all the way with the aim being the first to 'catch' the cheese.

More About Stag Do cheese rolling...

The Cheese rolling race has been held for the last 200 years and is believed to date back to Roman times. Cheese Rolling involves a wheel of Double Gloucester cheese weighing seven pounds, measuring three inches thick and nine inches in diameter being rolled down the perilous Coopers Hill. The competitors line up at the top of the hill, as soon as the cheese is released the race is on to catch it. and those taking part (2-20) then fearlessly (they say!) throw themselves down after it. The cheese wheel can reach speeds of 70mph giving a new meaning to the term in hot pursuit.

As it would take a miracle to actually catch the cheese while it's flying down the hill faster than Gromit's rocket, the winner is the one who reaches the bottom first. It may sound simple but the 250-yard 1 in 2 gradient hill is bordering on kamikaze and entrants should be well aware that there is risk of injury. All competitors entering do so entirely at their own risk.

As well as a bank of cameras at the bottom of the hill waiting to capture the moment and numerous film crews from around the world (your 15 minutes of fame could await) the base of the hill also contains a team of "catchers", essentially a load of big blokes from the local rugby club who are there to help slow down the effects of gravity and bring the competitors to a nice controlled stop. You'll also be running in front of a 5,000+ crowd who turn up every year to watch the action unfold and cheer on the runners and sliders.

As well as the downhill event there are other races throughout the afternoon including uphill races.

"Top quality activities at a reasonable price. We had a brilliant weekend."
