StagWeb’s International Sales Director Jamie heads to Riga.
At StagWeb we don’t just send you to any city that happens to have an airport. We visit all our destinations to make sure they meet our high standards and get you the best deals on hotels, activities and more. Of course that includes the beer.
When the time came for our regular Riga stag do recognisance mission, knowing the city is awash with amazingly cheap beers, superb man food and the potentially lethal Riga Black Balsam liqueur I decided I’d better take it like a man and sample them for your benefit. You’re welcome!
Best bar for stag laughs
Victory Pub – This welcoming English theme pub has everything your local back home should have; good beers, a pool table, table football, Sky Sports, strip club in the basement… Yes! A strip club in the basement! Genius! Every pub should have one, in fact one day, when I am king….
The perfect starting point for a great night out.
Victory Pub – Central District, Riga, LV-1050
Best local bar
It might not sound or even look typically Latvian but this fantastic pub is in prime position overlooking the square in Old Riga. Inside there’s live DJs, bar snacks and plenty of local beers (great prices) and Balsam which is a revolution in a bottle that the locals seem to have built a resistance to. Great place to chill out before hitting a club.
Cuba Café – Jauniela 15, Centra rajons, Rīga, LV-1004
Best local poison
Riga Black Balsam – It’s basically herbs and other ingredients added to pure vodka. 45% proof it was originally invented as medicine. Seriously, they gave this to sick people who after treatment probably started to slur their words, dance badly and tell people they loved them. You HAVE to try this stuff. Quite literally mind-numbing!
The old town is a bit of a maze, head on a Guided Bar Crawl, the local guides are brilliant plus they’ll arrange great drink deals for you.
Both Dome Square and Livu Square are basically giant beer gardens. Packed with bars and filled with tables it’s a really nice party atmosphere. Kalku Street is another great address packed with bars, clubs and restaurants. If you want a local flavour check out the funky cellar bars on Jecuba Street.
Best local food
If you fancy trying the local flavours then there’s a chain of fast food buffets restaurants that serve amazing local dishes accompanied by local beers. The food is really good and there’s plenty of it and the restaurants are dotted all around the city.
Weirdest local dish
When it comes to hangovers the local breakfast delicacy is kill or cure. Consisting of sprats and hearing pickled then served on thick rye bread topped with sauerkraut. Not for the fainthearted.
StagWeb Meal Deal

Best ‘man grub’
Weirdly Latvian (they do like all things American) the Moonshine Diner is themed like a 1950’s diner, complete with hotrods, cocktails, and waitresses in uniforms. Totally mad in a brilliant way the food is superb! Big steaks, burgers and sides. You even get to sit in old American cars. The venue also has live music and some stunning man cocktails.
Moonshine – 12 Kaļķu Street
Best late night food
Dumplings! And lots of ’em. Known as Pelmeni they’re similar to Chinese dim sum and packed with meats, seafood, spices or cheese. You fill your plate which is then weighed and you pay buy weight. The pelmeni cafes are at their busiest in the small hours as everyone heads home so the Latvian equivalent of a kebab but much tastier.
Best way to get about the city
Shanksy’s pony. This is a nicely compact city, everything is within easy walking distance so you don’t need to shell out for cabs. In fact our favourite hotels, bars and clubs are all within 10 minutes’ walk of each other.
Best money saving tips
Go local. Local beers and spirits are considerably cheaper and really good. Just take it easy as some of this stuff packs a serious punch!
Riga is the only place in Europe you can try bobsleighing down an Olympic run. And it’s epic! Something the guys will never have done before but they’ll be talking about for days. You can also get lunch, ask our team for details.
Anything to declare
I thought I had a fairly high tolerance to alcohol. Then I met Balsam. I was wrong.
Jamie was on a fact-finding mission for our Stag Do Guide to Riga. At no point did he drink too much Balsam or dance very badly. Honest.
