The Dough Thrower
📍 591 Cowbridge Road East, Cardiff, CF5 1BE
Flinging dough, firing wood and setting the pace for the Welsh pizza industry, The Dough Throwers have been carving a big reputation for themselves as they continue to make waves across the nation. Co-owner Ben spent his formative years growing up in a Swiss family bakery learning the fine art of dough creation which he has transferred across to the pizza-making industry – is it any wonder him and his partners have risen to the top?!
Best slice 🍕 Flaming Goat – Tomato, roquito peppers, goats cheese, mozzarella fior di latte and chilli honey.
📍 Stalls 231-241, Cardiff Central Market, 49 St Mary Street, Cardiff, CF10 1AU
“… with one aim, to bring tasty pizza to the sunny streets of Cardiff and beyond.” We’re not sure about the ‘sunny streets’ reference to Cardiff but FFwrness (Furnace) Pizza is making good on their aim in that they are certainly bringing insanely tasty pizza to the Welsh capital. All of their toppings are sourced from Wales, which shows the quality this fantastic nation has on its doorstep, though the dough is a traditional Neapolitan recipe topped with San Marzano tomatoes because they like to do things the proper way!
Best slice 🍕 Pork Loin & Pesto – Tomato sauce, mozzarella, artichokes, mushrooms, olives, ham, basil and extra virgin olive oil.
📍 2 Pen-Y-Lan Road, Cardiff, CF24 3PF
The first-ever Margherita pizza in Naples was fired way back in 1889 and the rest, as they say, is history. Many restaurants claim they make truly authentic Neapolitan pizzas, but very few get close to the ones produced at Da Mara, who craft all their pizzas in a Stefano Ferrara log burning oven. Now, this may not mean a lot to those who aren’t in the know, but this is the same type of oven which was used to create that very first pizza. Now, it doesn’t get much more authentic than that, does it?!
Best slice 🍕 Mark – Buffalo mozzarella, pistachio cream and Mortadella.
📍 1 Llys Y Brenin, Aberystwith, ST23 2AP
Ok, so sometimes we like a cocktail with our pizza, is that really so wrong? Definitely not when you’re sat in Baravin, where stunning pizzas and incredibly crafted cocktails collide in a taste fusion that makes you realise this is the restaurant you’ve been searching for all your life. Add to that the cool, hipster décor, the range of craft beers, the brilliant staff and very well considered playlist. Is it too weird we actually want them to adopt us so we can move in?
Best slice 🍕 Pizza Chorizo – Chorizo, sunblushed tomatoes, pesto, mozzarella.
Impasto Pizza Bar
📍 5 Sovereign House, Nelson Quay, Milford Haven, Pemborkeshire, SA73 3AJ
These guys attention to pizza detail is superb! They use San Marzano tomatoes, which originate from the volcanic soil outside Naples and have a distinctive flavour. Now that sounds like pizza worth waiting for, but you don’t have to as they oven-fire their pizzas at 465ºC in under 2 minutes. That’s Ferrari fast! They’re also so creative with an awesome array of pizzas lovingly created for you to gradually work through the entire menu in subsequent visits. Because you will go back!
Best slice 🍕 The Hog Father – Garlic butter base, mozzarella, parmesan, sausage, pancetta and balsamic onions.
📍 Upper Frog Street, Tenby, SA70 7JD
With two equally great restaurants to choose from, we popped into the Tenby Top Joes where they live by the credo “In Crust We Trust” and they really do keep things brilliantly simple. No gimmicks, no crazy flavours, no spray-painted walls or stilt-walking waiters. It’s just great pizza, done the authentic way with the best ingredients. Because sometimes that really is all you need in life and when it’s this good, you really can’t ask for anything more.
Best slice 🍕 Inferno – Tomatoes, mozzarella, wild boar, red onion, ricotta, chilli.
