Limerick isn't the biggest Irish city but it's up there in the top three, and it's famed for being one of the most innovative, progressive cities in Ireland - and it offers a lot more than just a few pints in the evening. The city may have had a bit of a reputation for being a bit rough in the past, but that's been defiantly shaken off, and the incredible array on offer in Limerick saw it appointed Ireland's first City of Culture in 2014. There's no shortage of Limerick stag ideas either when it comes to top stag activities, Limerick is in a class of its own. The River Shannon runs through the city, giving you a boat-load of water-based activities to choose from, or the entire city is surrounded by countryside if you'd prefer getting the boys outside. The sporting heritage of the city is famed; it's easily the home of Irish rugby and golf. Save sitting in a pub for when night falls there's too much to enjoy during the day.
Limerick is easily one of the best places in Ireland to indulge in a little horseplay the current racecourse is a contemporary, fresh building that's only been open since 2001, and was the first new course in Ireland for 60 years. It's as shiny and modern as you could want, with some of the best facilities in the country. The Limerick locals are by no means newbies though, the first Limerick course was built in 1790, so they've got some serious pedigree and history behind them if you want to treat the boys to a sneaky flutter at the races. Horse riding gives you the opportunity to jump in the saddle yourself and will get you walking like John Wayne in no time. We'd leave the cowboy hats and badges to the hens though. And if you're less into horses, more into horsepower, a go karting session might be more your speed it's a consistent stag favourite, and perfect for lads who prefer their rides with a little less kick.
When Irish Eyes Are Smiling
Whether you've jetted over all the way from merry old England, or you're a local Irish lad, it's always a good idea to spend a little time appreciating the city you're in, and seeing a little of the local colour (green, obviously). That said, it's always a better idea to keep the boys busy with some top quality activities, so why not combine the two and see the best of Limerick as you go? Golfing is great both as a gentle Sunday morning activity and as a way to stretch your legs and see a bit of the Irish countryside. Limerick is the home of the Irish Golf Championships too, you're guaranteed a world-class course. The River Shannon runs right through the heart of the city so chances are good you'll encounter it at some point on your stag do, but if you want to get a little closer and more personal with the river, deep sea fishing is a fantastic way to sit back and have a bit of banter and beer with the lads under the guise of activity. And Limerick is rightly proud of its rugby, find out why and get your blood pumping and veins popping as you scream at the pros from the sidelines.
A bit of friendly competition is a thing of beauty on a stag weekend it's one of the few times it's socially acceptable to aggressively try and annihilate your mates. As far as sporting cities go, Limerick is at the top in 2011 it was voted the European City of Sport. If you're willing to embrace the Limerick spirit and play dirty, a game of rugby is the perfect way for the groom to release all his pre-wedding stress, and the rest of you to work out whatever it is you're stressed about too. If you're bigger fans of the beautiful game, you can try your hand (feet) at five a side too, which is another great way to round off the weekend before you all head home. After all, if you're going to be cramped up in a car or plane for a few hours, you'll want to stretch your legs before you go. And if none of this sounds war-like enough, get your camouflage gear on and hunt them down with paintballing instead.
Getting the activities right is a crucial part of a stag do otherwise you and the boys will be sitting and twiddling your thumbs, waiting for something to happen. It's also one of the harder bits to organise: getting the numbers sorted, deciding whether you're going for clay shooting or abseiling, working out how to get there and back with time for lunch it's a minefield of things that can (and probably will) go wrong.
