South West & Wales
1-3 Westgate Building, Kingsmead Square, Bath, Somerset, BA1 2AE
Now, we might be a little biased when it comes to putting The Stable at the top of this list but, c’mon, pizza and locally brewed west country cider? That’s a marriage made in mozzarella dripping, slightly boozy heaven. All wrapped up in an uber cool venue that really is no frills, no hassle, no pretence. And also right opposite our office.
Our pick of the pizzas: Order The Blazing Saddle. Loaded with pulled beef, dry-cured bacon, caramelised onions, roasted red peppers, tomato sauce and mozzarella. Add sour cream and jalapeños for an extra kick. Maybe bring a towel.
The Old Gaol Stables, Cumberland Road, Bristol, BS1 6WW
Sourdough is a taste of the future. You can even get breakfast baps with sourdough rolls these days. But if you did, we’d slap that mess right out of your hands and march you to Bertha’s Pizza. This awesome pizzeria ferments their sourdough for at least a day before letting you get your greasy paws all over it, it’s a big part of the reason why their pizzas aren’t just some of the best in the South West, but the whole of the UK.
Our pick of the pizzas: It’s got to be the Meat & Heat. A fiery combo of mozzarella, Cobble Lane Cured pepperoni and hot honey. Whew boy.
Wet Dog Pizza Co.
80 Fore Street, Newquay, Cornwall, TR7 1EY
Wet Dog Pizza Co. were once voted the “Best pizza in Newquay”… By ‘a drunk guy’ on their own admission. As party pros we know that inebriated words are often the most honest and after a glimpse of these deliciously fresh pizzas, we think that this tipsy fella’ might’ve been on to something.
Our pick of the pizzas: Make it the Kinky Goat, topped with whipped goat’s cheese, rosemary mushrooms, red onion, sweet onion chutney and fresh rocket.
On the Waterfront
409 Southern Warehouse, The Quay, Exeter, EX2 4AP
Quenching your thirst with a huge range of beers and lagers, beating your hunger with delicious handcrafted pizzas. On the Waterfront is an easy choice for our top 40 pizza places. It’s a famous watering hole with views of Exeter’s striking quay and there’s nothing better than relaxing on the terrace while filling your face with a 16″ ‘dustbin lid’ pizza. Phwoar.
Our pick of the pizzas: For a foodie challenge order The Big 3-0. It’s a 30″ rectangular pizza served in a hot metal tin and woven basket, plus you get to choose your own flavours.
Bournemouth Pizza Co.
44 St Swithun’s Road, Bournemouth, BH1 3RJ
The Bournemouth Pizza Co. is laid back, no hassle Italian style dining, AKA the best kind of dining. Nobody here is going to judge you for dropping your knife and fork to demolish one of their doughy creations by hand. It’s all part of the sheer joy of munching on high quality, fresh pizza that we believe is the very best in Bournemouth. Get here for a slice as soon as you can.
Our pick of the pizzas: If you do like to be beside the seaside then you’ll dig the Pizza di Mare, topped with prawns, squid, mussels and clams.
27 Westgate Street, Cardiff, CF10 1DD
Now, full disclosure, Zerodegrees don’t exclusively deal in pizza as they also serve a huge range of delicious pasta, mussels and risotto dishes. But the fact remains that their pizza is so darn good, that if you don’t order it you’re a fool, a fool we tell you! What’s more, these distinctive wood-fired bases can be consumed with a side helping of Zerodegrees’ delicious beer, which they very helpfully match to your pizza to make sure your brew compliments your dinner. Perfecto.
Our pick of the pizzas: Ask for the Kedgeree. A blend of smoked haddock, red onions, smoked cheese, boiled egg, green peas, white wine and garlic cream sauce. Finished with cumin, parsley and lemon.
Dusty Knuckle Pizza Company
70 Llandaff Road, The Printhaus, Cardiff, CF11 9NL
The Dusty Knuckle has already won accolades as and national attention from the press. The pizza pros take classic Neopolitan wood-fired pizza and do weird but brilliant things to it, all in a cool urban space in central Cardiff with an edible garden, yeah, they’ll be talking to the animals next. What more would you expect of a pizzeria with the cojones to put halloumi and black pudding on a pizza?
Our pick of the pizzas: Take your pick. DKP Co have an ever-evolving menu full of creative pizzas so stop following our lead, be your own man!
