Pancake Day Facts

Pancakes were invented as a way of using up fatty and rich foods before fasting began for Lent on Ash Wednesday.

The word ‘shrove’ (or shrift) means to confess, people would say confession on Tuesday before fasting on the Wednesday, hence ‘Shrove Tuesday’ (‘short shrift’ is the quick confession criminals would give before being hung).

The world’s oldest pancake race is in Olney, Buckinghamshire and dates back to 1445.

In many other countries Shrove Tuesday is called Mardi Gras and celebrated with a street festival. Mardis Gras translates as ‘Fat Tuesday’.

In Italy it’s called ‘Carnivale’, which in Latin means ‘goodbye to the flesh’. Those crazy Italians!

Shrove Tuesday is also the date of olde football matches (more like rugby than modern football), where entire villages compete and the goals are up to three miles apart.

Us Brits use a fridge busting 52 million eggs on Pancake Day (approximately 22 million more than any other day) and 117 million pancakes are made, that’s 2 pancakes for everyone person.
