For stags who want that perfect mix between culture, catching up and scenic drinking spots, we’ve found the best place in Europe to visit for an awesome send-off.
Down by the River Ljubljanca you’ll find some secluded, sophisticated bars that you’ll never want to leave. You can relax by the calming waters before a big night or while away sunny afternoons discussing escapades from the night before.
The drinking culture here is mainly relaxed, but to catch the best of the buzzing nightlife, our advice is to stick to the impressive streets of the city centre. Top tip: Friday’s are the night to go out here.
Prešernov Trg is a focal point for Ljubljana's nightlife scene. This central city centre square is often packed until 3am with locals and tourists alike enjoying the many nearby pubs, bars and nightclubs.
Ljubljana castle is one of the best spots in the capital for grabbing an epic view of your stag do destination and learning a bit of Slovenian history in the process. Based on a hill in the very centre of the city, it's a great place to plot out a pub crawl as you'll have the ultimate view of Ljubljana's busiest squares, pubs and bars.
Nobody knows why it's called Ljubljana.
The patron saint of Ljubljana Castle is our very own Saint George.
Slovenia is home to roughly 700 wild bears.
Like Wales, the Ljubljana city symbol is the dragon.
Slovenia gained independence after 1,000 years in 1991.
Eats - Looking for a stag stomach liner in Slovenia? Seek out Ajdovi žganci, a thick and hearty national dish that comes in more variations than the lads could possibly try.
Drinks - If you're in Slovenia you simply have to sample a short glass of Brinjevec, a juniper berry brandy known for its bitter flavour. Originally intended for medicinal use (the benchmark for any good drink), Brinjevec is a bona fide Slovenian classic!
Ljubljana's city centre is easily navigated on foot and small enough to cover with ease. However, with easily rented bicycles from any of the city tourist information centres and a city cycle scheme called Bicikelj that allows week-long bicycle rentals for just €1, there's fewer better ways to get around Ljubljana.
City buses also operate across 26 lines if you want to save your legs for the nightclubs. Cheap, frequently running and practically 24/7 service, this is a great way to tackle the Slovenian capital when the bars and clubs close.
"Zdravo" - Hello.
"En pint prosim" - One pint please.
"Dve pinte prosim" - Two pints please.
"Petdeset tri pinte prosim" - Fifty three pints please.
"Ženin bo plačal za tiste" - The groom will pay for those.
Stunning. One of Europe's true gems, Italian and Central European influences make Ljubljana a very special destination for the stag do, add to that the very friendly Slovenians, great nightlife and amazing extreme sports, and you're set for an exceptional experience ...
Slovenia's amazing and it was only fairly recently, in the last decade, that the country has become more widely known as one of Europe's go-to destinations. We knew it was going to be a favourite of ours, so we got on the very first EasyJet flight out and have been delivering exceptional Ljubljana stag weekends ever since. Along with Tallinn, it's another smaller capital, but similarly, the centre is probably one of the most picture-perfect, entertaining and refined locations in Central Europe. Bottom line - if you want a quality weekend at a gentler pace, you're going to love it here.
It's a close-run thing, Europe's got so many fantastic destinations, but Ljubljana is a personal favourite of ours. It may not be as lively as some of our bigger cities, but it's got a relaxed vibe about it that we love, and it's a beauty to visit. Plus, if you're prepared to transfer out into the countryside, some of the activities are the best you're ever likely to do on a stag weekend.
This is covered in detail on the activities page, you've got plenty of options. The jewel in the crown is the extreme stuff like the rafting, canyoning and hydrospeeding - it's high quality and rivals anything in Europe, but a healthy transfer into the striking Slovenian countryside is required (allow up to 2 hours, but we can put in some welcome stag refreshment stops). And while we reckon it's absolutely worth it, as the man in charge you have to factor in the group and potential hangovers - so if you're up for a special group experience the groom will love, let the boys know the transfer trade-off in advance of the trip. If that doesn't tickle your fancy, there's plenty to do within easy reach of the city to keep the Ljubljana stag do ticking along nicely. And if you fancy a winter break, we arrange skiing close by. Yes, it really does have it all. Talk to us and we can give you the heads up on the best choices for the budget, the schedule and the group.
It's not a stag Mecca like Prague or Riga. As mentioned in the intro, Ljubljana provides a more refined location for the stag do. Many groups have returned and said that it's better suited to a relaxed, perhaps even older crowd looking to go somewhere new and enjoy a potentially more upmarket experience. Of course, being a European tourist hotspot there are plenty of great bars, cafes, restaurants, and some decent nightclubs, but by comparison to other capital cities, there are certainly fewer venues. That's not to say you won't have a great time, you will, but go knowing that a trip out to laidback Ljubljana for the stag do is going to be more about quality than quantity. There's a lot more info and a useful guide to recommended evening options here.
That bit's easy – leave it to us, we're experts. We've been sending groups for years, we know the best locations, hotels and accommodation for you to stay in and with us, you'll get great deals. Plus we provide local support and coordinate your airport and activity transfers at the same time. You want to look into accommodation options ASAP because it's a small and very popular city break destination for Europeans as well as Brits so the central hotels book out quickly - and they're the ones you want. For more on our accommodation, see our guide page.
Slovenia's capital is not the most flight-served destination, but there are plenty of options from the UK to get you there. Do keep in mind airfares, just like the accommodation, will get pricier the longer you leave it. Getting there on budget definitely plays a part, so look into that early and encourage the boys to commit to the Ljubljana stag do as early as possible. Airlines usually release schedules 6-9 months in advance and the early bookers usually get the better deals. In a nutshell, for direct flights, you'll be looking at leaving from London (Luton or Stansted) or Manchester.
